America Ferrera, the young star of the television show “Ugly Betty,” was honored at the 2008 ALMA Awards on Sunday, The Associated Press reported. The awards, created by the National Council of La Raza to recognize achievement by Hispanic entertainers, were handed out at the Pasadena Civic Auditorium. Ms. Ferrera was named Chevy Entertainer of the Year, for her work on “Ugly Betty,” which also won awards for best performance by a Latino-led ensemble cast and directing. Special honors also went to the fashion designer Narciso Rodriguez, the singer Linda Ronstadt and the pop star Shakira, who received a Humanitarian Award. Charlie Sheen, Edward James Olmos, Roselyn Sanchez and Judy Reyes also received acting awards. The Black Eyed Peas, the Cheetah Girls, Sergio Mendes, and Cheech & Chong performed, and Eva Longoria Parker served as host at the ceremony, which will be televised on Sept. 12 on ABC.
