Hit TV shows ‘Brothers and Sisters’ and ‘Ugly Betty’ repeated their success at the 2008 Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation Media Awards on Saturday by scooping the same top awards as last year.
‘Brothers & Sisters’, which stars Sally Field and Calista Flockhart, won the prize for Outstanding Drama Series, while the America Ferrera-starring Ugly Betty was named Outstanding Comedy Series for the second consecutive year.
R&B superstar Janet Jackson received the Vanguard Award in recognition of her efforts to promote equal rights, and homosexual singer Rufus Wainwright was presented with the Stephen F. Kolzak Award.
Meanwhile, comedienne Kathy Griffin won the award for Outstanding Reality Programme for her TV show ‘Kathy Griffin: My Life on the D-List’.
The 19th annual GLAAD Awards, which took place at Hollywood’s Kodak Theatre, honour individuals and projects in the media for their representations of the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender community.
Actress, America Ferrera was honored at Hollywood Life Magazine’s 10th Annual Young Hollywood Awards in Los Angeles yesterday.
The California native of Honduran decent, received her award in a fitted deep blue dress and stylish black peep-toe shoes.
Besides honoring the star of the show, the sitcom Ugly Betty also won, “Outstanding Comedy Series” at the GLAAD Award’s over the weekend.
After winning so many awards, it is hard to believe America still manages to get so choked up. Take it all in girl, you are officially a Hollywood estrella.
n an interview in the new issue of the RTÉ Guide, ‘Ugly Betty’ star America Ferrera talks about living life in the public eye.
“It’s getting harder and harder to go out and not get recognised,” she says. “At first I had some anonymity because I could hide behind Betty, but now it’s impossible. Especially when I go out at lunchtime still dressed as Betty - that’s even harder.”
But Ferrera adds that she has not let fame affect her: “I’ve kind of got used to the media attention, I mean I’ve got used to seeing myself in a magazine.”
She continues: “When I see myself on the cover of a magazine, that feels just as much of a character to me as Betty does. They’re both extreme versions of who I really am. So it’s fun to get dressed up as Betty, and it’s fun to get dressed up for the red carpet. But I’m very aware that they are roles that I’m playing for certain reasons. And they’re not at all who I am. But as an actor, it’s fun to kind of explore those pieces of yourself. But I’m neither one in my own personal life.”
The full interview, including Ferrera’s comments on what’s in store on ‘Ugly Betty’, is available in the new RTÉ Guide.
Hey guys, good news! Ugly Betty is back on Thursday April 24th and I have some information about some upcoming episodes:
UGLY BETTY

Where we left off: Betty (America Ferrera) thought she was going to interview Philip Roth, but instead she ends up talking to Phil Roth, author of the dating book, “Tap That: How to Score with Hot Bitches.” Amanda (Becki Newton) reunited with her biological father, Gene Simmons of KISS.
What happens next: Executive Producer Silvio Horta has returned the show to its original focus: Betty.
